Book review: Lead. Serve. Love. by Gregory E. Lang

Lead by example.
Serve each other.
Love the unloved.

These three examples from the book (which were used to form the title) are just a small sample of the 100 three-word action sentences found inside.

The messages are intended to make the reader more intentional about living out the gospel in practical ways: Lift others up. Listen with understanding. Act with humility. Share your joy. Use your gifts. Each "threeology" is numbered and written on the left page followed by a brief expository paragraph, and on the right page are 3-5 supporting scripture references. The format is very much like a short devotional.

I appreciate this book more than I expected. To be honest, I anticipated it possibly being full of feel-good directives that might sound nice but come up short in substance. But I have found that while each sentence is very simple and some of them are already routine behaviors in my life, many of them are challenging or convicting to me. I welcome that.

The author suggests practicing one a day. I have decided to encourage this as a family experience in which we will intentionally practice one message a week. We have a chalkboard in our kitchen, right above the phone, that will display the sentence for that week and one of the verses.

This week's focus:

We'll talk about the message throughout the week, read the verses, talk about ways to put it into practice, and at the end of the week, discuss how we did and the impact we experienced. At this rate it will take us two years to get through each devotional in the book.

I'm looking forward to seeing if this practice helps to make us more aware of our behaviors and attitudes and more purposeful in reflecting Christ to others.

Tomorrow I'll be back with another book review and will be giving away a copy!
